od is more nurturing and
compassionate than the most nurturing and compassionate of women!
Christ, the God-man, is more noble, courageous, and purposive than
the most noble, courageous, and purposive of men. The God of
Christianity is a wonder! The God of the Bible is deeply
loving, profoundly complex, yet simple in nature and intent.
God is a marvelous balance of character and compassion.
God has never been alone, because the
Triune God (one God in three Persons) has eternally experienced a
relationship of love. Within the Old and the New Testaments, a
consistent presentation is made concerning the nature and attributes
of God. Also, a consistent presentation is made concerning the
Persons of the Godhead.
Within
the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, Genesis,
three Persons appear. The Spirit of God is hovering over the
great deep, and in the midst of the text, two persons speak to each
other about the creation of humanity. Two Persons of the
Godhead speak, and two persons of different genders are formed and
fashioned. Persons beget persons.
A
consistency of Divine Persons flows through the Old Testament and
reaches its peak in the New Testament with the Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit. In the Old Testament the names are not as distinct.
The reader of the Old Testament will notice that the Holy Spirit
will do divine things, the Angel of the Lord will be called
God, and God the Father will be the God of Highest Heaven.
But it is in the New Testament where the Persons are strictly
limited to three, and the confession is made of the oneness of
Deity.
The
God of the Bible is vastly superior to the gods and deities of this
world. Three great religions believe that God is one: Islam,
Judaism, and Christianity. But it is only in
Christianity that we have the one God who suffered. In Judaism
and Islam God has only one nature and one person. (Those religions
are not Trinitarian and do not believe in three Persons in one God).
In those two religions God does not become a human person so as to
suffer to satisfy God’s sense of rightness and justice. In
Islam and Judaism God does not directly involve himself nor suffer.
But the glory of Christianity is the suffering God who has
died for the wrongdoing of His created beings.
Humanity
has done the sinning and God has done the suffering. People
cannot complain about God’s demand for trust in His Son, because God
has paid the “bills” for us. Without asking us, the Son died
on our behalf, and now, graciously, the Father asks us if we
want to go to Heaven through believing the good news and faith in
Jesus Christ.
